TGIF everybody!

Do you have big plans for the long weekend? If you live in the L.A. area, I strongly recommend checking out my favorite old-school whiskey bar in Silverlake, Thirsty Crow.
Locals might remember this spot as Johnny’s Bar and then as the short-lived, but infamous Stinkers Truck Stop (I’m sorry but those mounted skunk butts NEEDED to go!). Then, just over a year ago, it became Thirsty Crow and that's when I fell in love with its massive horseshoe shaped bar, retro wooden jukebox, fresh ingredients, proximity to SilverLake Lounge, and of course, the whiskey drinks!

This joint, like many of my fav L.A. bars, is located in a mini strip mall just a few doors down from Gloss Nails and SilverSun Liquor.

Fun Fact: Silversun Pickups named their band after this liquor mart, due to frequent beverage runs during band practice.

If you love a good whiskey ginger, order the “Thirsty Crow", a concoction of citrus, Sazerac rye whiskey, bitters, and ginger beer, topped off with a honest-to-goodness real maraschino cherry and served in a mason jar. Another drink to try here is the mint julep, made with organic mint, sugar, Maker’s Mark bourbon and crushed ice. They also offer a whiskey sour with a fun twist, which features delicious fresh strawberries,hehe.
Drinks are in the $10-$12 range, and the jukebox spins an eclectic mix of everything from jazz on vinyl to crowd-pleaser oldies. And since this is a theme bar, you can expect whiskey barrels, fake crows, bartenders in suspenders and bowler hats, even a cool antique soap dispenser in the ladies room (took me a few visits to realize you had to turn it upside down to use it! #truestory).

For cheap swill, show up Monday night for $2 Colt 45 and a DJ spinning old school vinyl.


BONUS: If you’re clueless when it comes to whiskey, consider showing up for Sunday night’s “Whisky Education,” featuring whiskey flights, $4 shots of Buffalo Trace, $5 Sazerac Rye, and live music.
